Civil Twilight

Civil Twilight. How did I first hear of them? I wish I could say I heard their music on the radio, or went to a concert by chance and just fell in love (that would make a good story). But no, I heard of them through my boyfriend-- he insisted on playing his own music in the car, and I'm glad he did. Their music brings you in and is full of emotion, and there is definitely a song for everyone on their newest album "Story of an Immigrant." Three out of the four members are from Cape Town, South Africa, and while listening to the album, I realized none of them really left their roots behind, yet each song seems to have a wildly different taste. The sound comes from inspirations such as "older British bands like Radiohead, U2, The Verve. Some American grunge stuff like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. Also earlier music by Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, and some local South African artists like Johnny Clegg."

Anyone who has asked for new music recommendations from me recently have heard earfuls of Civil Twilight-- their album seems to state that they are here, and here to stay. Keep an eye out, because they are getting bigger, and stronger as they continue to grow and find their sound.

Keep reading to see the interview I conducted over email with the band!

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
We’d probably just say rock. And more specifically alternative rock, which is a rather broad category.
Major influences are some older British bands like Radiohead, U2, The Verve. Some American grunge stuff like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. Also earlier music by Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, and some local South African artists like Johnny Clegg.
How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
We grew up in the same town in cape town south africa and met at school when we were really young. Obviously Andrew and Steve are brothers so they’ve known each other all Steve’s life. Andrew, Steve and Richard have known each other about 18 years, and Kevin has known everyone about 5 years. We met Kevin in Nashville after moving here 7 years ago. He was and still is a good friend and very talented musician and we’re very lucky he joined Civil Twilight!
When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
We first formed it in high school because we loved listening to music and wanted to play it and thought it would be cool to be in a band. We really just had fun playing together and writing songs.
Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows/tours?
We’ve performed all over the US, South Africa and the UK and Europe a little. South Africa is still one of our favorite places to play because we’re from there so it feels like a homecoming when we play shows there. We also love playing in NYC and Philadelphia, LA, Austin, San Francisco. Those are all good places to play. The 9:30 club inWashington DC is a fav venue, and the Bowery Ballroom in NYC too.
Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
We all write but Steve writes most of the songs and Kevin some on his one too. We like to write about things that everyone can relate to, but mostly its about what moves us. we never sit down and say, “lets write a song about this”. Music has to be honest and must move you before it’ll move anyone else. In order for that to happen it has to come from your heart. The best songs write themselves, as they say. I think all song topics change as the writer changes, because the songs are a representation of who they are at that moment in time.
Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
We often just play together in a room and come up with ideas that way. Also, Steve or someone else may write on their own and then bring ideas to the group and rework them with the band.
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
It’s evolved as our tastes have changed. I think it’s less about raw energy and a little more about subtlety now. We definitely focus more on lyrics and and sonics than we used to and have developed a taste for certain things that are different from when we started. as with anything in life, you grow up and out of certain things.
What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
We always try not to seek fame and fortune. The music has to come first otherwise there’s not much point. its not an easy business to be in and if you don’t love music it’s not very much fun. The love of music and people and connecting with people has to drive it. success is always nice and allows us to continue but its not the driving force.
Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Yeah, our families, our parents, friends and church in Cape Town, LA, and Nashville. Our wives and girlfriends, our managers, agents, label. No one can do it on their own.
Any last words?
Thanks for taking the time to listen to and write about our music!

Ships Have Sailed

Ships Have Sailed are quite the Alt-Pop up-and-coming band, and give me a sort of Death Cab For Cutie meets Imagine Dragons vibe. I heard about them (honestly) when they followed me on twitter a few months back. I almost never check out the bands that follow me first (especially if I hadn't heard of them before), but I am so glad I decided to. The first song I heard was "Summertime," a poppy, infectious song that didn't leave my head for days (seriously-- listen to it IMMEDIATELY if you haven't yet).

I got the chance to ask Will (lead singer, guitarist) a few questions, and these were the answers he gave...

1. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
We call ourselves "Indie Alternative Pop", but our range is a bit more diverse than that, and a bit hard to describe in its entirety.  I think like any artist, we're looking to carve out something unique for ourselves, and so we invite anyone reading to let the music speak for itself! We have a huge range of influences - everything from The Beatles to U2 to Nirvana to The Killers, Coldplay, Muse, etc...the list could go on forever, and we love to be inspired by new music as well as those favorites we already know!
2. How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
At this point, we're a duo made up of myself (Will) and Dan Hange.  We've known each other for about 6 years...both of us are transplants to Los Angeles from much more rural areas of the U.S. and we actually met through the audition process another band of mine was running to find a bass player...we had posted an ad on Craigslist and Dan was one of the bassists that responded (and ultimately the one we chose for that project as well).  Dan and I have always gotten along; we have similar senses of humor and a good musical vibe, so as Ships began to materialize he was the first person I asked to join the crew!
3. When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
Well, like I said, Dan and I were playing together in another project, and it had a very specific sound - kind of a rock, hip-hop fusion.  I've always been a songwriter, and I had a few songs piling up that just weren't right for the other band, but I wasn't feeling like pitching them for any other artists and I really felt a personal connection and felt myself wanting to sing them myself.  I started sketching out some pre-production in my home studio, showed them to a few people and was surprised at the incredible reaction I received...and that's kinda how the first EP 'Someday' was born.  People reacted pretty quickly, even given the low-key launch of the EP, and so I realized I was going to have to whip together a live show pretty quickly...from there it's pretty much history!
4. Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
We've performed in Brooklyn, Providence, RI, Boston, Austin, TX (SXSW) and Toronto, ON (Canadian Music Week) - and of course we play all over Los Angeles! One of our favorite hometown venues is the House of Blues, which is about to close actually, which is a bit sad.  From the road, some of our favorites are The Met in Pawtucket, RI, Johnny D's in Somerville, MA and we also had an amazing time playing our SXSW showcase at Handle Bar in Austin, TX this year!  Our next show is onSeptember 12th at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, which is one place we've never played before, so we're really excited about that!
5. Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
So far I've done most of our writing, but Dan has gotten more involved on a few of the tracks off 'Moodswings' and is showing interest in contributing even more to future works.  Subject matter for our songs tends to vary, but the common theme that continues to echo through Ships Have Sailed is the concept of how every turn on the road of life can effect our future.  I'm constantly fascinated by life and by the power of free will...what better to write about than the world we live in, the experiences we have and how they shape us into the beings that we are?  Since I am constantly changing, we are constantly changing and the world is as well, I fully expect for our writing to continue to develop over time! :-)
6. Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
Some of my favorite songs just pop into my head in weird places...taking off in a plane, in the middle of a dream, on a beach in the middle of nowhere...  It's really unpredictable and amazing, and I've learned to take a voice-recorded just about everywhere I go.  I've gotten some weird looks singing myself a melody in public places...but it's totally worth it, some of my best ideas are completely spontaneous!
7. How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
Well, Ships Have Sailed is still really young, but I personally see a huge amount of development between our debut EP 'Someday' and our sophomore full-length album 'Moodswings'.  I think 'Moodswings' was a bit more conscious of what we were trying to accomplish and convey with the album as opposed to 'Someday' which was a bit more of an experiment.  I'm looking forward to our next endeavors and what the future might bring...we will likely be just as surprised as everyone else!
8. What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
Well fame or fortune would certainly be nice, but I don't think it's something that you can really expect as an artist.  We are actively building our following, we love playing live, but are still trying to find a balance between being on the road and being in the studio - it's a bit of a balance when you're entirely indie, and priorities are important!  For the moment, we're really happy to continue to create music that we love and share it with the growing number of people who've come to love us as well...
9. Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Currently we're self-funded, but anyone who buys our music is essentially an "investor" and winds up partially funding the future of our project.  We of course appreciate all our family and friends for their support, but honestly the biggest source of emotional support is our fans.  I can be having the worst day ever, and then I get a mention or message from someone on Twitter who just discovered us, and actually takes the time to tell me about it, and it will completely turn my day around - it's a real blessing!  I also want to take a minute to sincerely thank all the music lovers out there who still purchase music! While streaming is a fantastic new technology that makes us very accessible to a wide range of people, the purchase of music is the single best way to show your support to an artist and ensure that the next album actually happens, and we truly appreciate every single person who chooses to support us in that way...we love you guys!!
10. Any last words?

We hope everyone reading this article feels welcome to come find us online (@ShipsHaveSailed), chat with us, check out our music and tell us what you think!  We love getting feedback and learning how different people hear our creations differently...it helps us learn more about you, about ourselves and to hone our craft...we love hearing from you! :-)

Again, anyone who has yet to hear their music, look below for their single "Summertime" and I promise you won't stop listening for days.

Urban Patterns

Urban Patterns. I'm almost 100% sure you've never heard of them, considering they have less followers on twitter and facebook than almost everyone I know. To be completely honest, I'm not even sure how I really heard of them. However, I'm glad I did.

Founded less than a year ago, Urban Patterns (Alex Funchess, Lucas Lee, Jack Lane, Greg Ji, Isaiah Chiu) are an Alternative Indie Pop Rock band from San Francisco, who are influenced by Young the Giant, the Strokes, Dave Matthews and so many other great rock artists.

Listening to their single "Ceilings" I honestly believe they will become so very successful, so very soon. Their talent is something hard to find in new bands today, and I think it deserves to be noticed by everyone imaginable. The song has a catchy drum set, and lyrics that really will not stay out of your head. I can even hear where the 'Young the Giant' influence comes in. There really is not much else to say, except GO CHECK THEM OUT! They deserve everything that's going to come to them.

Finish Ticket

Thank you to my friend Nat for suggesting I look up this band. They are absolutely AMAZING. I started listening to them a week ago, and I felt the need to write about them; to share this amazing band with everyone. The west coast based band consists of Gabe Stein, Alex DiDonato, and twin brothers Michael and Brendan Hoye.

The up-and-coming indie pop band first album, "Tears You Apart", is quite the debut for a band with lots of instrumental layers and killer melodies. Listening to the first track "Numb", it really surprised me how strong the band seemed to be in the music they made. There is nothing questionable about them, they know where they want to go, and they are going straight for it.

The band formed in 2008, and have toured with great bands such as My Chemical Romance, Young the Giant, Black Key, and so many other favorites. This album really shows how much hard work went into this album, and just how dedicated they are to their music. I'm hoping they keep growing and keep gaining popularity, because I would love to see them at Madison Square Garden someday soon. They really deserve it.

5 Seconds of Summer

Now, I realize 5SOS aren't a small band, but they are still considered up-and-coming. So I'm going to write about them.

Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin formed the band late 2011 in western Sydney, and are now getting ready to pretty much take over the world. Their music influences include Busted, All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Blink-182, and even Ed Sheeran.

The first time I heard them was when I saw their cover of "Jasey Rae" on YouTube. That's how they started- YouTube. It was really cool, actually, they only did covers and they weren't the best of quality (usually recorded on iPhone's and such) but they would get a ton of views and positive reviews. To be honest, I loved them too. They were charming boys, especially with their Australian accents, and their voices were amazing. They definitely knew what they were doing.

They just released their first official single "She Looks So Perfect". The EP has actually topped charts in 36 different countries. The track features punk-rock riffs, catchy lyrics, and an upbeat tune that will hhave you singing along in no time. With their steady gaain of loyal bands, 5 Seconds of Summer is definitely a band to watch out for.

Alex & Sierra

Alex and Sierra are the most recent winners from the X Factor USA. I watched the entire season of X Factor (Demi Lovato, duh!) and they have been one of my favorite acts from the very beginning. Their unique sound and story seemed to catch the eye of everyone who watched the show.

The first song I heard them sing was Toxic by Britney Spears. I actually had no idea what they were singing until i heard the lyrics. Their version took me by surprise actually, as I was not expecting them to sing something like that. Every song they sang after, I've fallen in love with. Their sound is just so unique and I've heard nothing like it; it's really cool to hear something completely original.

I'm hoping they come out with new music really soon, as I would love to hear some original songs. But until then, this performance is going to be on replay at my place.

American Authors

The first artist I decided to write about is American Authors. I heard about them through a friend, whose cousin is in the band. I first heard them on Alt Nation a little while ago, and again I heard them play on Jay Leno. I bought their album recently after forgetting to for months, and the diverse sound and unique songs really caught my attention. The use of banjo got me going as well, as I've never really liked hearing the banjo in anything but country.

They have a very unique sound; alternative with a dash of folk and indie here and there. Even better, their songs are so catchy anyone will find themselves singing along! I bought their EP and while listening to it I realized the soundtrack is not only amazing, but the lyrics are well written and it seemed a lot of time and thought had been put in, giving the songs so much more depth and meaning.

Their new EP really shows how passionate they are about music and doing what they love. I honestly hope "Best Day of My Life" isn't the last I hear of them, the potential they have shouldn't go unnoticed!

I'll link all their sites and social media below as I definitely recommend giving them a listen. They've easily become one of my top ten bands, and I would love to know what you think!
